Making A Wireless

Desmond had been looking at books in the library and has been interested radios and short-wave for a long time. We had been talking about radios and Des said he would like to make one himself. Here are pictures of him starting work.

This is the circuit diagram for a medium wave wireless

We made up a circuit board using thin wire and cardboard, this works very well and you can draw the diagram on the card so you can see where to put all the bits. We use a pen to punch the holes and then Des soldered all the joints.

We now need to buy some components,  here Des is looking through the Maplins catalogue to make a list of things to buy.

This is a very simple wireless to make and it does not need a battery, it gets its power from the radio waves themselves.

Desmond will update us when he has finished making and tuning his coil. See you soon.

Maths Class Day Change

We have moved our Wednesday Maths Class to every Thursday at the South Lynn Scout Hut, Portland Place, King's Lynn, PE30 5NA. This will give the Wednesday afternoon Downham Group more time so we can do more things.

The rooms are lovely and it is so easy to get to. Here are the members working in the new room and some pictures of the kitchen we will be using for the cooking classes.

Here are some pictures from the out door classes we had in July. The weather was lovely and we could not stand to be in the hall so took ourselves to the park with all our books.

One of the lessons we did was on biodiversity, what is around us and what makes it healthy or sick. This linked in with our Maths classes and English and we also did the work on our Compass Group outings.

Here we had to hug a tree like hippies in the woods :)

We then had to find out what the tree was and describe how it felt and write something about this. Some of us cant write so we all worked together on it.

Here we are working out how high the tree is, you start off with you back to the tree and take normal paces forwards, counting how many as you go. You  then stop and bend over so you can look for the top of the tree, if you cant see it you take some more paces. Once you have gone far enough you will then know how high the tree is.

We all laughed so much and the maths was fun as well.

Here we are looking for bugs and insects, it was so hot that day all the bugs had buried themselves in the earth so we thought we should leave them alone.

After all the walking around we were tired and hot so we sat under a willow tree and chatted about what we had seen.

This was one of the best days we have had and so are going to do a lot more, we all had such fun and learned a lot as well. There was also a lot of walking so we all felt quite stiff at the end.

We all want to say thank you to our teacher, Claire, for doing this with us. We have never had a teacher who will run our classes wherever we want before and she is great.

So Far In 2012

Downham Market Group

We have just had our third meeting in Downham and it was great. The number of people coming is getting bigger and one week we had 13 people come and have tea with us.

We started this group in partnership with Mencap. Unfortunately Mencap have had cuts to their grants and are unable to continue the partnership.

However we are very lucky and extremely grateful to all the staff of the Bluebell Florists and Tearooms for all their support and for the use of the wonderful tearooms, the cakes are out of this world.
If you would like to come and join us for tea, cake and a chat just drop in on the 1st Wednesday of the month at 2pm, all of us would be so happy to see you.
The address is
Bluebells Florist
The Old Hall
47 Priory Road
Downham Market
Norfolk
PE38 9UJ
Tel/Fax  01366 388418

The SAP officers are peer advocates and run the group, welcoming new members, talking through issues and problems or just chatting with people who come in. David's role is as a resource to the group offering information, guidance and as additional support to the peer advocates when they ask for it.

Badminton

The Badminton Club meets every Friday at the Lynn Discovery Centre at 1pm. We get fantastic support and tutoring from Janice Baker, the County Badminton coach. Janice not only runs the group but she also got funding to support us continuing our classes when our grant ran out.
Jan, our coach
Janice gets all of us to do warm up exercises before we play and then divides us up and we play the singles and doubles and as well as all this we all have a turn playing Janice which is fun but also very strenuous as she does not hold back.
Getting ready to play
Everyone has noticed a difference in flexibility, breathing and hand to eye coordination so this group is very successful. Membership is increasing due to word of mouth and people really enjoying themselves.
